Appendiceal carcinoid
Appendiceal carcinoid
Incidence Appendiceal NETs are the commonest neoplasm in the appendix (30–80%). They are diagnosed in 3–5 in 1000 appendicectomies for acute appendicitis. - Pathology They are classified in the same way as other NETs. Staging is determined by tumour size and involvement of either the subserosa or mesoappendix (T) as well as nodal (N) and distant metastases (M). Treatment Tumours <10 /uni00A0 mm in size have an excellent prognosis and - appendicectomy achieves cure. A right hemicolectomy should be considered in the rare situations of positive or unclear margins or deep mesoappendiceal invasion (>3 /uni00A0 mm). An onco - - logical right hemicolectomy should be performed for tumours >20 /uni00A0 mm. Low-risk tumours do not require any follow-up (see also Chapter 76 ).
