Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with a number of proctological problems (see Chapter 80 Intestinal complications are common after the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), when opportunistic organisms can cause gastroenteritis ( Summary box 74.2 ). HIV may also cause a specific enteropathy . Treat ment is directed towards the relevant organism and surgery should be avoided if possible.
