INNERVATION OF THE BLADDER

INNERVATION OF THE BLADDER

The lower urinary tract (LUT) is innervated by sympathetic, parasympathetic and somatic a ff erent and e ff erent nerves, under higher control from the cerebral cortex and pontine micturition centre (PMC). The actions of the spinal and peripheral nerves on the LUT are summarised in Table 83.1 Coordination of the micturition process is performed by the PMC in the brainstem and is under the control of higher centres in the cortex, thalamus and hypothalamus, which play an important role in delaying voiding until it is socially con venient.
