TOPICAL HAEMOSTATIC AGENTS

  • Physical or biological topical haemostatic agents are considered adjuncts to traditional mechanical and electrosurgical tech - niques. The physical agents commonly used are absorbable gelatin, absorbable collagen and oxidised cellulose and func - tion by providing a sca ff old that encourages fibrin deposition and accelerates clot formation; they can also soak up as much as 40 times their w eight in blood, providing tamponade and compression. Biological topical haemosta tic agents such as thrombin and fibrin sealants encourage clot formation and are often injected or sprayed over the bleeding site. A combination of the abov e can also be used. TOPICAL HAEMOSTATIC AGENTS
