Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external sound source is present. It may have an extrinsic cause; for example, the pulsatile tinnitus of a glomus tumour. Usually , however, the tinnitus is generated within the internal auditory pathway . - Thirty per cent of people will experience tinnitus at some time in their lives. Tinnitus frequently accompanies presbycusis, as well as any other condition that a ff ects hearing. Most individu - als habituate to the presence of tinnitus but in some patients it proves intrusive. Treatment is with reassurance, masking and hearing aids (for patients with hearing loss). Tinnitus
