Perineural invasion

While there is no clear consensus on the criteria for diagnos ing PNI, it is generally described as being present if at least one-third of the circumference of a nerve is surrounded by tumour cells and/or if deposits of tumour are found in any of the three lay ers of the nerve sheath. PNI is a marker for the biological aggressiveness of a tumour and an independent risk factor for cervical metastases, local recurrence and therefore poorer prognosis. Perineural invasion
