Temperature management
Temperature management
When undergoing burn assessment and fluid resuscitation it is vital that the patient maintains an adequate core temperature. A key function of skin is thermoregulation and in large burns t this is severely impacted. Hypothermia is a component of the ‘lethal triad of trauma’, which includes acidosis and coagu - lopathy; the combination of all three significantly increases mortality . Measures to counteract hypothermia include infusing warmed fluids, external warmers such as the ‘Bair Hugger’ and increasing the ambient room temperature in the emer gency department/assessment room.
