There is a fibrous envelope covering the heart and separating it from the mediastinal structures. This includes a parietal layer and allows the heart to move with each beat. It can be left wide open after cardiac surgery without any ill e ff ects; however, there are a number of conditions a ff ecting the pericardium that may present to the surgeon.
