Tibial shaft fractures

Tibial shaft fractures

  • Tibial fractures in children are often very amenable to non-operative treatment, starting with an above-knee cast, followed by conversion to a Sarmiento patellar tendon somewhat limited; as such, less angular deformity (only 10–15°) can be accepted and no rotational deformity . Some shortening of the tibia can be accepted as the tibia is expected to overgrow by 0.5 /uni00A0 cm in response to injury . If it is not possible to hold the fracture in an acceptable position with a cast, then external fixation, elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN)/titanium elastic nails (TENS; thin flexible nails inserted in the canal of a long bone to splint it) or plating is an option.
