Imperforate anus (strictly , it should be anal ‘agenesis’ or ‘atre sia’) has historically been divided into two main groups – high and low – depending on the level of termination of the rectum in relation to the pelvic floor. Treatment and prognosis are influenced by any associated abnormalities of the sacrum and genitourinary systems (see Chapter 18 ).
